Algio (Without The Waste) Packaging
A re-usable pill packet made from an algae bio-plastic material.
Algio is a portable and reusable pill packet that reduces the amount of plastic used in blister packs. It is made from a plant based material, refillable and easy to use.
Through conducting primary research with pharmacists and a variety of students, I was able to understand how much of an impact blister packs had on the environment, being a linear production. It gave me an understanding of where and why my product was needed in the current pharmaceutical economy. Algio is my response to eventually turn blister packs from a linear economy to a circular economy.
Algae Material.
Algio will limit blister packs ecological impact with materials that last for generations or can be recycled. From researching biodegradable, eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, I found an algae based bioplastic which can resemble the same material as plastic. It is a degradable material which degrades in 2-3 months depending on weather conditions.
Blender Design.
I designed the pill packet in Blender, considering the dimensions to be able to fit in a pocket. The pill packet will hold 16 tablets as that is the average amount sold in blister pack boxes in pharmacies. The lipped lid will fold down and lock to hold the tablets in place securely. The dots hold two purposes, the first is it holds the pills in place better when they are inside their individual pods. The second purpose is to guide people who have visual impairments to find where the next tablet section is from underneath so they don’t have to touch the medication.
Website.
Once you scan in the QR code on the box or the pill packet, it will take you to ALGIO.com, the website to inform you about Algio and the drugs you are taking. The home page will have the options of ‘Dosage’, ‘How to Use’ and ‘About’. To add style to the website, the flask will be shown empty when you enter the site, however as you scroll down the page it starts to fill up with a blue liquid to represent the Algio logo.
Digital Advertising.
Taking a different approach to advertising and thinking about how I can expand the Algio audience I created a short Video advertisement that could be displayed on the Piccadilly big screen/billboard in london to attract a larger audience. This advert could also be played on TV to make the people who watch TV buy the product but to also educate them on what new materials are being used.
